What steps can Oklahoma employers take to protect themselves from employment law claims?

Have you every wondered what are a few reasonable actions you can take to protect your business in an employment discrimination lawsuit and from employment law claims?

Below are practices that I have found to be sound:

Have and consistently follow employment policies and procedures.
Having no policies is a recipe for turmoil and perhaps employment termination lawsuits. Having policies and procedures and not following them is even worse. Besides turmoil, an employer subjects itself to being questioned for not following the policies, a hit to credibility in an employment discrimination case.

Be aware of the laws and rules that affect your business.
If you are subject to federal rules and regulations, know what they are and what you are required to do and not do. Consider for example my blog post about whether your business may be covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Know the items to consider before terminating an employee.
Even when everyone has the best of intentions, sometimes employment termination still needs to happen. If you are an employer facing that situation, consider some of the ideas I blogged about in this post.
